Now, itвЂ™s true that some players prefer highly linear character progression in their RPGs (see Final Fantasy IVвЂ™s huge popularity), but it is possible to give each character their own unique gameplay feel while still letting the player have some say in how they grow and develop over the course of the game. This is made up for somewhat with being able to choose who to stick in your active party & the multi-character combo system but itвЂ™s still the weakest aspect of the game. Most other RPGs give the player some control over how to build their characters, but Chrono Trigger features very linear individual progression. There's whether or not you used the Epoch to get to Lavos (since, if IВ recall correctly if you use the time machine you crash it into Lavos, which alters the end sequence a bit).ДЄgain, that's like four different endings BEFORE you start **** around with the timestream and getting the bizarre-o ones. There's whether or not you ressurrected Chrono, that's a variation (a major one I might add). There's whether or not you killed Magus, that's a variation. Sure not as many variables as Mass Effect as a whole, but come on, the game was from the 90s! And all the sidequests you do actually affect how the gameworld looks at the end. They were awesome! All of them! I got myself an import from the US back in the day and I remember how I cursed when the NTSC adapter for my european SNES got hit and the game froze.Д«ut the game is still phenomenal. Some of them were joke endings and you could only get them on a new game+. A lot of them are really silly and can only be gotten if you're on your new game + mode and attack while leaving things unresolved, but hey, they're there.Д¬hrono Trigger had 8 endings I found. CT promised me 12, and there were 12 (13 if you count the 'bad end', which the devs didn't). The other lesson they missed from Chrono Trigger of course being the simple one:В if you promise X number of endings, you deliver X number of endings. An obvious thing to include.Д«ut then, much about the game's ending comes from left field so maybe obvious isn't what they were going for? It just feels like a missed opportunity is all. If you hang idle at the decision moment in the Crucible too long and wait, it just says 'Critical Mission Failure' like it does every time you die anywhere else.
